This first evening of the “Christian Altenburger in the MuTh” cycle is dedicated to string instruments. Two double concertos — one by Antonio Vivaldi, one by J.S. Bach — are matched with one of Gioachino Rossini’s virtuoso string concertos. Together, these three works demonstrate the lively competition between differing voices which epitomises the concept of the “concertare”. Béla Bartók’s well-known Divertimento for Strings was written in 1939 to a commission from Paul Sacher. This piece maintains the “concertare” concept through its interplay between solo instruments and full string orchestra. The brilliance of its construction and Bartók’s evident sensitivity for his folk music roots make this an outstanding composition. Programme: Gioachino Rossini: String Sonata No. 3 in C major Antonio Vivaldi: Concerto for two cellos and strings in G minor, RV 531 Johann Sebastian Bach: Concerto for two violins and string orchestra in D minor, BWV 1043 Béla Bartók: Divertimento for String Orchestra Tickets: Band A €38/ B €33/ C €28; box seats €48; Children and young people: A €20 / B €15 / C €9
