Simsa Fünf The SIMSA FÜNF quintet was founded in 2017 by Viennese percussionist Sebastian Simsa. The group has its roots in jazz, but also draws on the traditions of classical chamber music and folk. Their CD “The Time We Need” (which was nominated for the German Record Critics´ Award) is in effect a collection of short stories. They spin tales around a host of subjects: a photo of the Brandenburg Gate, covered in snow, taken during the Cold War years; a bridge in rural Finland; a small Catalonian town, called La Bisbal; a drunken night out in Vienna; a “folk song” that emerged from a dream; and many more besides. Christian Muthspiel is enthusiastic: “After decades being treated as exotic outliers, string instruments have finally arrived on the jazz scene as a sound in their own right. A generation of young musicians is freeing itself from the shackles of genre boundaries imposed by others. Despite being trained to the very highest classical standards, they refuse to deny themselves the joys of playing non-classical music, of jazz, of improvisation, and they reject the outmoded system of academic pigeonholing.” Ángela Tröndle & Pippo Corvino Quintet Ángela Tröndle was born in Salzburg in 1983.
