The year 2020 brings the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. The Minetti Quartet take this opportunity to rove far and wide through his string quartet oeuvre, performing a selection of major works from his early, middle and late creative periods. The powerful manner in which Beethoven’s compositions seem to develop is unmistakeable, yet the commonalities within can also be clearly heard: all part of his incomparable style, which rendered him unique from his very earliest compositions. Gravity, doubt and melancholy are all to be found in Beethoven’s string quartets. But this selection of his work also shows a Utopian vision of joy and freedom: a Beethoven who, in spite of everything, never relinquished his belief in humanity’s goodness. Programme: Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet in A major, Op. 18 No. 5 String Quartet in E flat major, Op. 74, the “Harp quartet” String Quartet in E flat major, Op. 127
