At the end of their lives, Schubert and Bruch composed two works in High Romantic style. Schubert’s only string quintet (written in the two-cello format) dates from 1828. It represents both the culmination of the chamber music form and his own personal swan song. Bruch’s String Octet in B flat major was composed in 1920, just seven months before his death. It was lost for many years, until a Viennese collector bought the score at an auction and donated it to the National Library of Austria. Max Bruch once said that he placed “the main emphasis on the melody”. This is clearly heard here, especially in the second movement of this Late Romantic work.
