There is no doubt that both writer and composer have their place in the pantheon of great Russian artists. The same themes of kindness and compassion which inform Dostoevsky’s great novels find their way into his simple, affecting tale “The Dream of a Ridiculous Man”. It is read here by the Josefstadt actor Michael Dangl, who is making his first appearance at MuTh in this cycle.
The selected Rachmaninoff Lieder are thoroughly romantic in nature, and perfectly embody the them of this evening, “Dreams”. Next to the piano, Rachmaninoff was particularly fascinated by the warm timbre of the cello. It was no less a person than Pablo Casals who described Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata as “A major work”, whose melodic richness and emotional breadth is hard to surpass.
