Beethoven — a staunch European, a humanist, and truly a giant among men! Apart from their personal friendship, what keeps bringing Benjamin Schmid, Ariane Hearing and Matthias Bartolomey back together is their shared fascination with the great composer, and a constant desire to get a little closer to this gigantic figure. For a musician’s life means a life that includes Beethoven. And the bicentenary of his death in 2020 provides a welcome opportunity to take on the challenge of his piano trios over the course of three concerts. On each evening, two of Beethoven’s trios are programmed alongside one of his cello sonatas. Presented here along with his bleak, indeed rather spectral Opus 70 no. 1, Beethoven’s Archduke Trio pays tribute to his deep friendship with Archduke Rudolph, who is regarded as the most musical and humane Hapsburg of his time. The second and third concerts in this series will take place in the autumn of 2020.
